Can Argentina Finally Do It?

Argentina comes to Brazil looking to win it all. Twice in a row they have been eliminated by Germany. They come to this World Cup with their most expectation since 1986, when Diego Maradona took the tournament by storm and almost single handedly won them the world cup. They have an attack and midfield to die for, featuring the four time world player of the year and Maradona's heir apparent Lionel Messi. He has some friends to go along with him. Gonzalo higuain is one of the best finishers in the world, having moved to Napoli this season; he had a fine season and will look to build off of his strong Serie A performances. He led the team in goals in South Africa, and can look to replicate this form 4 years later. Then there is Sergio Kun Aguero, considered the best striker in the premier league by many; though Luis suarez and his supporters would beg to differ.

Aguero has struggles through injuries for much of the season but if he can get himself fit they he can light the tournament up. In midfield there is Ezequiel Lavezzi, and Angel di Maria. Di Maria is coming off perhaps his best season for Real Madrid and a man of the match performance in the Champions League final. However Argentina have issues, Sergio Romero is by no means a world class goalkeeper, and is a liability. The back line is also suspect. With Pablo Zabaleta they have a strong right back, good in the tackle, and an excellent crosser of the ball. However they are not as solid elsewhere. At center back they will have Benfica star Ezequiel Garay, but who will partner him is a big question mark still, less then one week from the start of the tournament.

Many believe that Manchester City center back Martin Demichelis will partner Garay. This is not a partnership, which will strike fear into many opponents and is by far the weakest of all of the teams who consider themselves genuine contenders. Marco Rojo at left back can be torched if the argentines aren't careful, and then there is the question as to whether Javi Macherano will play in midfield or defense for his country. He has played center back for the past few seasons at Barcelona but will he stay there for Argentina. Many Argentina fans are disappointed the Carlos Tevez was not on the plane to Brazil. The Juventus forward had a good tournament in South Africa and could've provided skill and experience either off the bench or in the starting 11.

With the tournament being held in South America, in the land of Argentina's biggest rivals, the men from Buenos Aires will look to come away Victorious and may very well do so. They have an easy group to progress from and After that, anything can happen. The World Cup only comes around every 4 years, and this may be Lionel Messi's final chance to succeed on the biggest stage while still at the peak of his powers, he will look to have a big tournament and if he does so, Argentina may very well be lifting the trophy at the end.
