Lets Mull-er Things Over; Preview of World Cup's Group G

Taken from

The group of death, contains 4 teams which in any other group can easily make it out of the group stage and into the knockout round. Everyone fully expects Germany to run away at the top of the group and claim top place, leaving three very good teams to battle it out for the final two spots.

Key Points:

Germany - The favorites of the group and maybe even the favorites of the entire tournament, the Germans boast perhaps the most complete roster of the tournament. The Germans have the best goalkeeper in the world in Manuel Neuer, and an excellent defense, with the likes of Mats Hummels, and Philip Lahm. Losing Marco Reus for the entire tournament is a huge loss, he was the Germans best player in qualifiers and was on fire at the end of the Bundesliga system. He and Thomas Muller were beginning to click, and strike up a partnership. With Reus gone, the Germans will have a big hole to fill, and can do so. Still expect them to get out of the group and cause some noise at the tournament.

USA - Call it sentimental, call it heart over mind, call it what you want but I truly believe the United States will take the second spot in Group G. They have won all 3 of their World Cup tune up games for the first time in their history, and they played their most complete game against Nigeria. If they are able to get hot, they may very well make some noise in the tournament. They need to sort out their back line issues, first finding a set starting back line and then getting the players to play well together. If they can do so, they will be on their way to a knockout stage birth. Who better to organize a back line then Tim Howard, and look for him to have another huge tournament just like he did 4 years ago in South Africa. Look for the United States to make it out of the group stage, and even to the knockout round.

Portugal - Boasting the worlds best player is always a bonus and Portugal can say they have him. However, Cristiano Ronaldo is struggling for fitness right now and may be playing at the World Cup at less than 100%. The rest of the team will have to step up if Ronaldo is not at his best, players like Nani, and Mountinho will have to play well in order for the Portuguese to advance past the group stage. I do not believe they will advance past the group stage due to their lack of depth and ability to support Ronaldo. They also have issues in midfield, and in goal, and I look for them to finish third in the group.

Ghana -  Though I have them finishing fourth in the group, I would not be surprised if they finished higher. They have eliminated the United States at two consecutive World Cups and have a deep roster. Featuring Kevin Prince Boateng in midfield, and a slew of players around him, the Ghanians may be a dark horse to finish in the top two of the group and advance to the knockout round.
